20mph scheme for Steeple Morden village centre

20mph sign

In April 2023, the Parish Council conducted a survey to gauge interest in and options for a 20mph zone within the village. The results of this survey have been available on the village website ever since: Click here . The PC then applied for funding from Cambridgeshire County Council for the installation of a 20mph zone in 2023. On this first attempt, we were unsuccessful. However, armed with insights gained from this initial application, we applied again in the 2024 funding round and were successful. This was reported in the village newsletter for November 2024.

Since then, the scheme has been reviewed by the team at Cambridge Council, and with minor modifications to our proposed plan, the project details have been finalised. You can find the full details of the proposed road markings and signage in the detailed plan: Click here. The fundamental approach has been to focus on encouraging drivers to maintain speeds below 20mph through the very centre of the village, particularly around the recreation ground, the school, the church, the pub, and Cheyney Street. While it may be tempting to include a larger portion of the village, it is believed that concentrating the zone in the centre will be more effective and less likely to be ignored. Please note that part of the council’s project process includes announcing the scheme in a local newspaper, so you may see this in the coming months. If you have any comments, please email: roads@steeplemorden-pc.gov.uk

Please note that installation of the scheme is unlikely to be until late 2025.
